05 - Between Two Cultures

As an activist father, Tame Iti faced an internal struggle between fighting for te reo Māori and being present for his sons. His boys felt the pain of their father's absence but were not old enough to understand the cause he was dedicated to. Only later as adults and parents themselves could Tame Iti's sons breathe through the intergenerational trauma and begin to heal the wounds of their past. By sharing their stories of heartache and hope, the Iti family sends a call for reconciliation through open dialogue.
